Students embark on a journey of discovery in Washington, D.C. through the immersive program, WilDCats at the Capitol

Since its establishment in 2016, the WilDCats at the Capitol internship program at the University of Kentucky has been opening doors for students to engage in transformative experiences in Washington, D.C.

This initiative, crafted through collaboration between the Office of Federal Relations, the Department of Political Science in the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Student Government Association, has emerged as a cornerstone of experiential learning for UK students.

Currently in its Spring 2024 semester, Gavin Cooper, a junior at UK majoring in community and leadership development, is participating in WilDCats in the Capitol, interning in Senator Joe Manchin's office (WV). Reflecting on his experience, Cooper expresses his enthusiasm for the hands-on involvement at a high level, recognizing the intricate impact of D.C.'s workings on everyday life.

At its essence, the program offers a semester-long immersive journey in the nation's capital. Students reside together, attend classes, and intern full-time, all while progressing towards degree completion. This fusion of academic and professional growth empowers students to apply classroom knowledge in practical contexts, equipping them for prosperous careers post-graduation.

Cooper underscores the program's uniqueness, highlighting how it allows him to accumulate valuable internship experience without impeding his graduation timeline.

Over time, WilDCats at the Capitol has broadened its scope through collaborations with various university departments and offices. Notably, the Office of Federal Relations partnered with the Office for Student Success last year to extend the program's reach across all academic domains, ensuring inclusivity.

Amelia Iliohan, a graduate of UK who participated in the program in 2018, credits it with igniting her passion for international agriculture. She now holds a fulfilling position as the associate director of events and member engagement at the National Association of States Departments of Agriculture (NASDA).

In a strategic move reflecting the university's commitment to student welfare, Executive Director of Federal Relations Eric King appoints Matthew Jackson as assistant director of federal relations, tasked with managing and promoting the WilDCats at the Capitol program.

Beyond professional development, the program encourages students to explore diverse career pathways and contribute meaningfully to society. It invites all students to join the WilDCats at the Capitol community, fostering leadership and ongoing education.
