The legend of St. George and the dragon arrives at Carnon Downs
The timeless tale of St. George and the dragon unfolds once more, this time perched atop a post box in Carnon Downs, Cornwall, as a charming crocheted creation.
Crafted by Joy Macdonald and members of the Carnon Downs Crafters Group, this latest woolen masterpiece joins a series of delightful toppers showcased in the area. Previous creations include a spring-themed display featuring native birds of Britain and a tribute to the Royal Wedding with King Charles and Queen Camilla.
"It's become quite a tradition now. I craft a new one every month," shares Joy, aged 64, who spearheads the creative efforts.
For the St. George and dragon topper, Lesley Rance crafted the iconic St. George figure, unveiled just in time for St. George's Day on April 23rd, while Joy herself brought the fearsome dragon to life.
"The dragon was a breeze for me; I've made them before, so I had the pattern ready," Joy explains. "The villagers have come to expect it. Whenever I visit the shop, everyone eagerly asks, 'What's the new design going to be?'"
In 2022, the craft group gained international recognition for their poignant tribute to fallen soldiers and horses of World War One. Crocheting thousands of poppies, they created a stirring display with a steel-framed horse as its centerpiece, capturing the hearts of many far beyond Carnon Downs.
