Police in Michigan report that two young siblings tragically lost their lives at a child's birthday party when a car crashed into the building

Authorities in Newport, Michigan, revealed that an 8-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother tragically lost their lives, while at least nine others sustained serious injuries during a child's birthday celebration at a boat club. The incident occurred when a driver crashed into the building where the party was being held.

At a news conference on Saturday, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough announced that a 66-year-old woman, allegedly intoxicated while driving, was taken into police custody and is currently held at the Monroe County Jail. The two children were pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle collided with the Swan Boat Club around 3 p.m. Saturday, coming to a halt approximately 25 feet inside the building where the birthday party was underway, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office on Sunday.

Responders administered first-aid to 15 victims, with nine requiring transportation to hospitals by ambulance or helicopter, while others sought medical assistance independently.

Sheriff Goodnough, visibly moved during the press briefing, stated that three children and six adults sustained "serious life-threatening injuries." The driver, whose identity remains undisclosed by authorities, faces charges for operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, with the possibility of additional charges pending as the investigation progresses.

Located on Lake Erie, approximately 30 miles south of Detroit, the Swan Boat Club urged people to refrain from visiting on Saturday to allow emergency vehicles passage. The club remains closed until further notice, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support and requesting thoughts and prayers for all affected parties.
