Minnesota Senator Nicole Mitchell was apprehended under suspicion of burglary subsequent to being discovered inside a residence
Police have reported that a Minnesota state senator has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary.
Democratic Senator Nicole Mitchell was apprehended after being discovered inside a residence in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, which lies nearly four hours northwest of Woodbury, the district she represents, as per Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd speaking to USA TODAY.
Mitchell, aged 49, was taken into custody at Becker County Jail on Monday and is being detained on the burglary allegation, though formal charges have not been filed yet, according to Todd.
The late father of Mitchell was documented as a resident on the same block, according to records.
At approximately 4:45 a.m. on Monday, law enforcement responded to a homeowner's report of a burglary, Todd stated. Upon arrival, officers found a woman inside the residence, who was later identified as Mitchell.
The decision on whether to pursue charges will be made by the Becker County Attorney's Office.
Property tax records for the county indicate that Mitchell's stepmother and her deceased father resided on the block where the alleged burglary took place in 2022, as reported by the Star Tribune. Mitchell is currently serving her first term in office.
Elected in 2022, Mitchell transitioned into politics after working as a TV meteorologist and an Air National Guard commander.
The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Caucus declined to comment but acknowledged being "aware of the situation," as reported by CBS News.
Republican Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson expressed in a statement to CBS News, "The public expects legislators to meet a high standard of conduct. As information comes out, we expect the consequences to meet the actions, both in the court of law, and in her role at the Legislature."
