In Nashville, Tennessee, Mandisa, a renowned contemporary Christian vocalist known for her appearances on "American Idol" and her Grammy-winning album 'Overcomer' in 2013, has passed away at the age of 47.
A representative confirmed to The Associated Press that Mandisa Lynn Hundley, as she was known, was discovered deceased in her Nashville home on Thursday. The cause of her death remains undisclosed.
Hailing from near Sacramento, California, Mandisa's journey into music began in church. Her rise to fame took flight when she claimed the ninth spot on "American Idol" in 2006, earning praise from host Ryan Seacrest for her vibrant presence on the show.
Following her stint on television, Mandisa ventured into the music industry, releasing her debut album "True Beauty" in 2007, which garnered a Grammy nomination for best pop and contemporary gospel album. She continued to produce five more albums, including a festive Christmas collection.
In 2014, Mandisa achieved Grammy success once again, clinching the award for best contemporary Christian music album with "Overcomer."
Throughout her career, Mandisa courageously shared her battles with depression, weight struggles, and her unwavering faith. Her candidness resonated deeply with fans, leading her to publish a memoir titled "Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God's Joy" in 2022.
Following her passing, the Christian radio network K-Love paid homage to Mandisa's honesty and vulnerability, acknowledging how her openness about her own challenges encouraged others to address their own struggles.
